I just read an article in the Dallas Morning News about the impact of the Affordable Care Act on availability to cancer centers.  The article cited concerns from groups and people such as the Insurance Commissioner of Washington as well as Seattle's Cancer Care Alliance over the new discrimination found among health insurers and the networks offered to save money.  The reality is that health insurer's in an effort to offer premium savings are now offering plans with reduced networks.  These plans can vary and be offered both on and off the public health insurance exchanges.  But most importantly there are many instances where major cancer centers or other specialist centers are left off of these reduced networks.  While legislation is pending on stronger guidelines for network suitability, the truth is that consumers do need to be more diligent about what is important to them in there coverage concerns while selecting a plan.  So while the affordable care act has absolutely given more opportunity to purchase insurance the reality is there will still be hidden consequences that will have to be addressed.
