I just read an interesting article on a young gentleman who caused an accident while texting and driving.  It is important for us to consider the implications of such an event when we are considering our own insurance.  The young man was also uninsured.  It inspired be to think about uninsured and under-insured motorist coverage, as well as, the importance of proper focus and attention when driving.

How often do we get distracted by current events or outside influences that may seem more important at the time?  How dangerous are we to other people when we allow this to happen?  While I know that we get really comfortable when we are driving, especially as we gain experience, how often do we consider the trade-offs of our distractions against the risks they may pose.  For this young man, he took out a light pole (could easily run 25k to replace), another car, a mini-van, and a motor-cycle and then fled from the scene.  That one moment could have destroyed more than just a light pole.

The young man was also uninsured, so anybody that had insurance would be fortunate to have the proper uninsured and under-insured motorist coverage to help cover the losses.  This is an area where policies will differ from state to state.  For instance in Minnesota if this happened in Minneapolis, Saint Paul, or any of the suburbs the other drivers would have personal injury protection to cover any medical losses before the UM/UIM coverage kicked in.  However, this coverage does not typically cover property damage, in this instance your property damage would be covered through your collision coverage.  In some area's such as Dallas or Houston Texas you can purchase a policy that covers property damage for uninsured and under-insured motorist, but that is a specific policy that is state specific.

I have included a link to the article from Insurance Journal.  In addition if you would like more information about low cost auto insurance in Minneapolis, MN or surrounding areas please contact the Garsys Agency at 866-432-4753.  You could also use the same contact information for affordable auto insurance in Texas or any of the other state we do business.
