Health Insurance Information
Health insurance protects you from either taking on unexpected medical expenses, or by helping you manage known medical expenses. Health insurance benefits are typically administered by a central organization such as a government agency, private business, or not-for-profit entity. The cost's or premiums for health insurance are generally determined by evaluating a group (for example; 20 year old males in Minnesota). Using this method, an insurer creates a cost for the group, such as a monthly premium or payroll tax, to ensure that money is available to pay for the health care benefits specified in the insurance agreement.
While there are many types of Health Insurance some of the most important differences come from how they are obtained. The two main ways of obtaining insurance is through a Group (such as your place of employment, or a professional society), or as an Individual or Family. The policies for both of these are very similar, however, additional information about employee benefits and group insurance can be found under the business insurance tab.
With the Affordable Care Act Both types of plans can be purchase either through a Agent, or through either local state exchange or federal marketplace (depending on your location). Various plans work differently and can include: health maintenance organizations (HM0), preferred provider organizations (PPO) and point-of-service (POS) plans. These plans provide comprehensive health services to their members and offer financial incentives to patients who use the providers in the plan. These are typically referred to as major medical policies.
All Health insurance is underwritten which means that currently (until 2014) for individual policies not everyone is eligible for coverage. Starting in 2014 underwriting will be comprised of Location and Tobacco use for both group and for individuals. Pre-existing conditions will no longer alter the offer for coverage (things like exclusionary riders, or conditions specific deductibles, or premium increases will be eliminated).
Other forms of health related products include fee for service plans (also known as Indemnity or Limited Benefit Plans). These plans can be used to not only supplement health insurance (help pay for out of pocket expenses). These plans typically pay for a portion of the up-front cost of the bill and not the whole cost of the services rendered. Like Health insurance the cost is typically relative to the benefits provided.
