The March 31st deadline for open enrollment and there is still a good segment of the population that does not realize that there ability to shop or change health insurance with out a specific qualifying event ends on that day.  People who enroll in plans between now and then will be eligible for a plan starting May 1st.  However after that they will need a qualifying event in order to purchase or change health insurance coverage.  Qualifying events include:
  • Marriage.
  • Child Birth, Adoption, or placement.
  • Permanently moving to an area that offers other health plan options.
  • Losing other health coverage (from job loss, divorce, eligibility for medicaid or chip, expiration of cobra, or health plan decertification.  Important note! termination for non-payment of premium and voluntarily quitting health coverage do not qualify as coverage loss, nor does loss of coverage that is not considered to be minimum essential coverage).
  • For people already enrolled in the Marketplace coverage, an income change that impacts eligibility of tax credits or cost sharing reductions.

Most special enrollment periods last 60 days from the date of the qualifying event.
